Dharan is located at the Sunsari District of Koshi Province in eastern Nepal, Dharan is a sub-metropolitan city that was created in 1958 as the Kingdom's fourth municipality. After Biratnagar and Itahari, it is the third most populated city in eastern Nepal. The word "dharan" in Nepali refers to a saw pit.

At an elevation of 1148 feet (349 meters), Dharan is located in the northern foothills of the Mahabharat Range, with its southernmost point grazing the Terai region. Near Phusre, where the ancient walking route to Dhankuta and a significant portion of the Eastern highlands left the plains with the ascent of Sanghuri Danra, the Dharan marketplace grew.

The capital of the lowland Limbuwan kingdom of Morang was Dharan. Buddha Karna Khebang, King of Limbu, governed it. King Buddhikarna Khebang was descended from Phedap Kingdom's king, King Muray Hang Khebang. Dharan-Bijaypur served as the capital of the Morang Kingdom of Limbuwan from 1584 to 1774. Additionally, it served as the functional capital of the Ten Limbu Kingdoms, also known as Pallo Kirat, or the entire Limbuwan region. Therefore, Abhiman Singh Basnet, Parath Bhandari, Kirti Singh Khawas, and Bali Baniya, the emissaries of Gorkha King Prithivi Narayan Shah, met with Morang state ministers in August 1774 and decided to establish cordial relations with the Gorkha Kingdom and acknowledge the Gorkhali king as Maharaja in exchange for the kingdom.

Budha Subba: This temple has great cultural value for the Dharan people and is a significant and distinctive religious destination for Nepalis. The surroundings of Budha Subba Temple, which is perched above the Bijaypur hills, are incredibly picturesque.

Pindeshwor Baba Dham: The most well-known Bolbam Mandir in Nepal is Pindeshwor Baba Dham, also known as Pindeshwor Mahadev Babadham. Many devotees from various locations gather barefoot every Monday during the month of Shrawan to honor and show their trust in Lord Shiva by drinking holy water from the Koshi River.

As many Nepalese soldiers, many of whom were Dharan inhabitants, joined the Gurkhas, the Gurkha Memorial Park was created "to preserve the legacy of Brigade of Gurkhas in Dharan for posterity before it is forgotten and lost forever", as many Nepalese men, many of whom were residents of Dharan, joined the Brigade of Gurkhas.
